Disable ‘Click Wallpaper to Show Desktop’ in macOS Sonoma

After upgrading to macOS 14 I noticed a new behavior whenever I clicked (or misclicked) the desktop, all my open applications would animate out of view.

This can get annoying pretty quick. Luckily, disabling it is easy.

How to disable

  • From the menu bar, click the Apple menu  > System Settings
  • Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  • Scroll down to the Desktop section and toggle Click wallpaper to show desktop items to Only in Stage Manager.

To turn it back on just toggle it back to Always.

Keyboard Shortcut

You can retain this functionality as a keyboard shortcut when you have function keys enabled. Show desktop is already assigned to Fn + F12.

  • From the menu bar, click the Apple menu  > System Settings
  • Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys
